Dental implants are a great option to restore your smile. They are permanent, they can help strengthen the features in your face, and they function and perform just like natural teeth. There are two different types of implants: endosteal and subperiosteal. Let’s take a look at the two main types of dental implants in Miami.
Endosteal implants are surgically implanted directly into the jawbone. Typically shaped like small screws, cylinders or plates, they are the most commonly used type of implant. Endosteal implants require two surgeries. After the initial surgery is completed, a second surgery is performed to connect a post to the original implant. The artificial tooth is then attached to the post.
Subperiosteal implants are placed under the gum but on, or above, the jawbone. This type of implant may be used in patients who have a shallow jawbone and can’t or don’t want to undergo a bone grafting procedure. As the gums heal, the frame becomes fixed to the jawbone. Just like endosteal implants, the artificial teeth are mounted to the posts that are protruding through the gums.
